Edge of the Canyon Motor Lodge is family Owned and Operated. Previously the El Rancho this motel has been owned by the original sellers, Bernice Balog and her husband since 1971. Bernice and her husband raised their four children while operating the El Rancho. After her husbands passing her children assisted her with running the motel until 2011, when Bernice's daughter Susan Lankford partnered with her. Susan previously a school teacher with a 20 year tenure educated hundreds of Thermopolis children and took that kindness and knowledge and helped build the El Rancho into a community.
Our family looks to build on the legacy the previous owners established and be the diamond in the rough of Thermopolis.
Coming midSummer 2025 our personal drive-in theater with the history of the El Rancho preview before every feature along with the original signage on display.
The history of the motor lodge, also known as a motel or motor inn, can be traced back to the first three decades of the 20th century. The rise of the automobile as a symbol of freedom and escape in the 1920s led to the emergence of roadside communities along highways, and the first motels were built in rural areas. These motels were often run by husband and wife teams and offered lodging, some also had small diners or a coffee shop. We are looking to bring back the original tradition of the Motor Lodge; we are a small family run business, located along America’s Longest Highway, Historic US Highway Route 20 that spans the length of the United States, beginning on the West Coast in Newport, Oregon and ending on the East Coast in Boston, Massachusetts.
